Over 80 years of excellence in dentistry
Morgantown Dental Group began in 1927 when William H. Cozad graduated from dental school and decided to locate his practice in Morgantown. Dr. Cozad was a remarkable practitioner who embraced prevention with an attitude of innovation.
While others pursued dentistry in single practice, largely extracting teeth and making dentures, Dr. Cozad hired the first hygienist in Morgantown and was the first to begin a preventive practice. He expanded the practice with associates, Dr. John Bell, and in 1957 with Dr. J. Fred Wilson. Dr. John H. Dempsey was added in 1960. The concept of a group practice was innovative in dentistry and allowed for the exchange of ideas and interest.
Since group practice does require room to grow, the group decided to relocate to its present location at 142 High St. in 1969. In 1974, Dr. Edward A. Hawkins joined as an associate to Dr. Wilson and the other three dentists in the practice. At that time, MDG had four hygienists, five assistants and three front-office staff.
While times have changed, the attitude and dedication to prevention has not. The practice was not only the oldest continuous practice in Morgantown, but also the largest.
Dr. Michael Wilson joined his father, Dr. Fred Wilson and Dr. Hawkins in 1980, after completing a general practice residency at WVU’s School of Dentistry. Dr. John D. Lindsay began as a single practitioner in the downtown area and joined MDG on invitation in 1990. From 1990, to Dr. Fred Wilson’s retirement in 1999, the practice grew to thirteen employees and celebrated 30 years at its current location.
In 2006, MDG suffered a tragic loss with the untimely death of Dr. John Lindsay.
Later that fall, the sixty-two combined years of Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Wilson was complemented by the addition of Dr. Josh Dolin. Last summer, the group expanded again with the addition of Dr. Michael Wilson’s son, Jason, as an associate.
As we begin our 83rd year, we look forward to the future in Morgantown and the beginning of a fourth generation of dentistry to carry on a valued professional reputation of excellence in dentistry.
